The Sri Menanti Palace, a 5-storey wooden palace built in 1902 to replace an older burnt-down palace, was unique in its Minangkabau-style architecture. Constructed of hardwood timber without the use of a single nail or screw, the palace boasts intricate carvings and 99 pillars representing the 99 warriors of the various clans.
The official residence of the royal family until 1931, Sri Menanti Palace was turned into a royal museum in 1992.
