Kota Lukut was constructed by Raja Jumaat in 1847 during the height of the tin-mining industry to protect the miners from the attack by secret societies. The fort was 607 ft long and 505 ft wide and had a ditch 15 ft deep. It was defended by large muzzle loading guns and at the centre was a large double storey palace to accommodate Raja Jumaat and his family.
