Located across from the Sultan Abdul Samad Building, Merdeka Square is the site of the historic changing of guard from British colonial rule to independence for the country, then known as the Federation of Malaya. The Union Jack was lowered and the flag of the Federation of Malaya proudly hoisted here precisely at midnight on 31 August 1957.

The square, formerly known as the Selangor Club Padang (field), was a popular venue for cricket, hockey, tennis and rugby tournaments. At present, the recreational spot accommodates an underground car park, shops and restaurants, while cricket is still played here occasionally.
This is the venue for the National Day celebrations and the 100 m flagpole in the square is the tallest in the world.
