Istana Budaya also known as The Palace of Culture is located on the junction of Jalan Tun Razak and Jalan Kuantan, the 21 000-sq m theatre complex is currently rated as one of the top 10 theatres in the world, on par with the Royal Albert Hall in London. The architect, Muhammad Kamar Ya’akub, incorporated Malay cultural elements into his creative design. The base of the building is shaped like a Malay moon kite (wau bulan) and the main building resembles a traditional betel-leaf tray (sirih junjung). The lobby, auditorium and performance stages are based on the features of a traditional Malay house.
